Some Things To Consider When Designing An eCommerce Website

If you are considering launching an ecommerce website of any description, no matter what you are selling, there are certain things to bear in mind that are critically important. Possibly the most important thing of all when considering ecommerce website design is that your website must be optimised for access from any device, especially mobiles.

Just four years ago, in July 2014, an article stated that statistics showed that by 2017 over a quarter of ecommerce sales would be made by mobile. Talk about an underestimate! In fact, the website statista.com in January 2018 showed that mobile ecommerce sales as a share of total ecommerce sales in trillions of US dollars in 2017 was actually 58.9%! The same chart showed that by 2021 total ecommerce sales are heading for $3.56 trillion and the mobile share of that will be 72.9%. So in three years’ time nearly three quarters of all ecommerce sales will be made on mobiles. If your ecommerce website design is not mobile-friendly you are going to be losing out in a very big way.

Your website loading time is another extremely important factor. Well-known website blogger Neil Patel has said that figures show that 47% of consumers expect a web page to load in two seconds or less and 73% of internet users say that they have found a website that was too slow to load. Worse still is the statistic that showed that 25% of users abandon a page that has not loaded after four seconds and this figure increases to 40% after ten seconds.

Further statistics show that 30% of consumers use the search facility on ecommerce site to find the product that they want. Faceted search is a useful function to include when you are in the process of ecommerce website design as it enables a user to drill down their search by price, size, colour, manufacturer, material, and any number of other things that can speed up their search, depending upon your products.

Security is, of course, vital, and so it is critical that your site has SSL implemented in order to retain your customers trust.
